This course includes a basic introduction to chemical concepts of matter, properties, elements, compounds, classification of matter, and chemical reactions. Oxidation, acids and bases, pH, the solution process, and how these all relate to the spa and beauty industry, the biochemistry of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and other organic molecules and how they specifically relate to hair, skin, and nails. The nature cells, cell reproduction, melanin, and how chemical productssuch as lotions, shampoos, conditioners, etc., interact with these systems will be studied. Also examined will be the physical concepts of light and color and the electromagnetic spectrum, and its effects on the human body. Also, basic electricity, electrical safety, and energy conservation within the spa/salon will be examined.
